O’s Notes: Boston-based saxophonist Charlie Kohlhase is an educator, composer, bandleader and performer. He leads his Explorers Club, an octet on his latest release, A Second Life. Charlie is a gay man successfully living with HIV. He’s appreciative that he’s able to live normally with medication, in what could be considered a second life. This life extension is not wasted as Kohlhase continues to compose and produce fine work on this 78-minute, 10-song set. He mixes free jazz, modern jazz, with several fresh covers notably “Eyes So Beautiful As Yours”. We also liked “No Such Explorer”, “No Dog, No Bike”, “Tetraktys”, and the spacey “Airport Station”.
