O’s Notes: Trumpeter, composer and pioneering record label owner Charles Tolliver is a living legend. Live at the Captain’s Cabin (Alberta, Canada, June 24, 1973), finds him at the top of his game, reflecting the mood of the times in the Black Community: pride, protest, passion, and fury. This all came out in the music, mostly Tolliver originals with John Hicks (p), Clint Houston (b), and Cliff Barbaro (d) rounding out the quartet. The solos are well developed and lengthy notably the work of Houston and Hicks on “Stretch”. The program evolves over two CDs supported by excellent liner notes, a winner that is packed with energy.
