O’s Notes: It seems as if Monk was less appreciated when he was alive than he is now. Perhaps that is because many of us are just arriving at the place he was in jazz space! His phrasing was on the offbeat of bop that is already played on an offbeat. He played this way consciously all of the time whether playing his own compositions or covers. Both are represented here. “Jackie-ing”, “Let’s Call This” and “Caravan” are prime examples among the ten ‘Best of’ selections. This is a great snapshot.
