O’s Notes: This quintet: Jeff Jenkins (p), Michale Bailey (sax), Kenny Warren (t), Ken Walker (b) and leader Stranahan (d) is tight and polished. They have amazing chops and they express a ton of passion as they play. You can capture the essence of this on “Romaine’s Groove” with its funky backbeat and a swinging feel that acts as glue for all solos. They mimic that feeling on “Now I’m Up” but all six tunes are solid. The amazing fact is that Colin is only 17 years old! Yes, we hope to be hearing a lot more from such a promising debut.
