O’s Notes: The power of the big band can be exhilarating when done well. Mark Masters’ arrangements are usually well orchestrated and result in a fine performance. This interpretation of Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess is no exception. The band includes some fine musicians: Billy Harper (sax), Tim Hagens (t), Ray Drummond (b) and Joe La Barbera (d). The music is never congested yet you can feel the emotions of the score with the power of a large brass section. It is a beautiful landscape.
