O’s Notes: Frank presents us with a program of nine solo piano compositions. Five are originals with four arrangements of tunes by Motian, Ellington and Monk. Kimbrough has gone over ten years without a solo project. This one started as an evaluation of new microphones with Matt Balitsaris and it blossomed into this recording! Frank draws on his mentors, Paul Bley, Shirley Horn and Andrew Hill for inspiration. The results are positive, a refreshing creative set. Highlights are his simplification of “Jackie-ing” and the rolling finale, “Ca’lina”.
