O’s Notes: Hilary Kole was a popular jazz vocalist on the New York jazz scene early in the new millennium. A Self-Portrait reflects on her current mindset after the demise of a seven-year romance and partnership with her manager. She makes good use of dynamics to draw listeners into her music on “While We’re Young”. The program includes new arrangements of classic pop songs that appropriately allow her to express herself. We felt the pain over fourteen selections with the exception of “Lemon Twist”. The band is strong with notable performances by both pianists Tedd Firth and John DiMartino. We anxiously await her recovery and new love soon.
