O’s Notes: Gene’s big voice on tenor sax is savory, smooth and mellow. This program is absolutely wonderful, capturing Gene in his prime (1954, 1961-62 and 1970). His misfortune with drug related imprisonment slowed him down but his late recordings with all-star bands such as these are top-notch. Clark Terry (t), Mal Waldron (p) and Wynton Kelly (p) are among the many talented musicians here embellishing the music.
