O’s Notes: Big Bands thrive on arrangements of great popular music especially under the direction of world-class arrangers like Mats Holmquist. This set is A Tribute To Herbie (Hancock) +1 original by Holmquist. Strong soloists like saxophonist, co-leader Dick Oatts, and drummer John Riley make a good idea great! Crisp brass layering on top of tight, punctuated rhythms makes Holmquist’s unique arrangements sing. “Cantaloupe Island”, “Maiden Voyage” and “Watermelon Man” are among the best in a strong session.
