O’s Notes: Wayne (piano), Peggy Lee (cello), Ron Miles (cornet) and Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon) are the Gravitas Quartet. They perform ten of Horvitz’ originals plus one cover. What seems like a simple core rhythm is surrounded by more complex improvisational melodies on songs like “A Walk In The Rain”. In contrast there are several that have more of a classical bent perhaps owing to the instrumentation. “July III” and “To Say Your Name” are examples. The title track has an abundance of improvisation that gently takes us to free jazz space. The SACD sound is exceptional adding pleasure to this relaxing listening experience.
