O’s Notes: Countless artists have celebrated the music of Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. Absinthe is the latest example, a duet featuring pianist Joe LoCascio and Woody Witt on sax. Both of these Houston-based musicians are impressive in their own rights having performed with top jazz artists and released albums as leaders. So it is no surprise that this CD is a good listening experience from the racy “Rain Check” to many warm ballads like “Chelsea Bridge”, especially when remember the Ellington/Strayhorn legacy. The liner notes mention a tenth track “Johnny Come Lately” that was not on our disc!
