O’s Notes: German pianist, composer Markus Burger leads a formidable quartet through ten original pieces on Accidental Tourists. The warm ballads and mild jazz-fusion were inspired by people and places. There’s nice bass work by Bob Magnusson on “River Child” and “Fall Days”. Burger relaxes us on the intro to “Sleeplessness” and “Perpetuum Mobile”, while saxophonist Jan Von Klewitz shapes “Kodiak Coho” and “Not Today”, all before the peaceful “The Journey Home”. We can forget the fine punctuation of drummer Peter Erskine most notably on “Ocean”.
