O’s Notes: Many of the collections of African music have focused on their popular, contemporary jazz music. This session is true to the title with a celebration of traditional jazz, African style. The best African jazz musicians are featured including Andy Narell (steel pans), Marcus Wyatt (t), Paul Hammer (p), Darius Brubeck (p), McCoy Mrubata (ts) and Frank Paco (d). The music is vibrant with lots of percussion, especially songs like “Amasabekwelanggeni”. Our favorites among many were “Lovers On Empty Corners” and “Owed to Bishop”. There is much to enjoy and welcome with these worldly jazz musicians.
