O’s Notes: Felton is a strong student of music. She started out singing in her gospel choir then perused a thorough education. Cynthia has a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Berklee, a Masters from NYU in Jazz Performance and a PhD in Jazz Studies from USC. She is not only singing but also arranging and producing all of the music on Afro Blue, her debut recording. She gets support from an all-star cast of musicians including Wallace Roney (t), Cyrus Chestnut (p) and Robert Hurst (b). The program consists of the music of Oscar Brown sandwiched between two warm versions of “Motherless Child”. Felton’s voice is strong and her work on the title track and “When Malindy Sings” shows strong potential.
