O’s Notes: These are four seasoned jazz musicians enjoying their trade at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Bill Mays (p), Bob Magnusson (b), Joe LaBarbera (d) and leader Bud Shank (sax) give us their take on eight classics. The duet with Shank and Mays on “Lover Man” is excellent. We also enjoyed the extended arrangement of “Manteca”. Bud was in great form for what turned out to be his last performance with his quartet. He died three months later on April 2, 2009. This is a fine way to remember him!
