O’s Notes: Japanese American jazz guitarist, composer Gene Ess assembles a trio with bassist Scott Cooley and Clarence Penn on drums for his latest release Ah-Bop. As suggested, this is a mostly a bebop outing until Gene changes direction into progressive rock-fusion on “Array”. “Dark Blues” are as stated before his solo on “Crossing”. Gene serves up a wide range of diversity in moods that keeps listeners engaged.
