O’s Notes: Awa sings and chants in her native West African tongue. She arrived in New York in 2011 and has rapidly developed a following. Sangho composed all of the music for her debut, Ala Ta (The Truth Belongs To God), with heartfelt messages about life. The lyrics flow over soothing rhythms with guitarist Mao Otayek and Percussionist Daniel Moreno providing a solid foundation. Many African guest artists inject unique and tasteful notes into the mix, notably Baro (talking flute & tambin) and Zumana Taretta (n’djarka & one-string fiddle). This is a soothing and tasteful intro to contemporary African music.
