O’s Notes: This is an interesting twist with Wayne applying his sax along side a large ensemble including strings. All of the songs, half new compositions written by Shorter, have a fresh all acoustic sound that has an excellent harmonic foundation. It is a solid basis for the improvisation wizardry of the band. That band includes Wayne’s touring quartet members: John Patitucci (b), Danilo Perez (p) and Brian Blade (d) as well as Brad Mehldau (p), Terri Lyne Carrington (d) and Alex Acuña (percussion). This studio set takes Shorter into new territory that he quickly masters.
