O’s Notes: Varmus plays trumpet and wrote all of the tunes for this neo-bop fusion set. He is accompanied by a well-knit team including Brian Woodruff (d), Nate Radley (g), Toru Dodo (p) and Yoshi Waki (b). Jacob’s notes are crisp and his phrasing is cool. Radley and Dodo shine on “Untimely Intrusion” along with the leader. They have a nice sense of swing that brings the listener into the music. It feels great!
