O’s Notes: New Tricks is a quartet with Kellen Harrison (b), Shawn Baltazor (d) and leader/writer/producers Ted Chubb (t) and Mike Lee (sax). They play straight ahead jazz that is fresh but with a strong link to hot bop of yesteryear. The music is packed with improvisation but centered on structure. One of the horns always comping the melody keeping the audience engaged. This is second release for the band though the musicians had a wealth of experience beyond that and the band is a tight unit. They show lots of promise.
