O’s Notes: The cover depicts some of the sorrowful memories in the history of America. It shows slaves picking cotton in a vast field. It suggests the blues and that is exactly what tenor saxophonist JD Allen serves up on Americana. Seven of the nine selections were composed by Allen who reaches deep to express dark emotions here. The band is a trio with bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston, a well honed unit that makes a slight departure from their usual hard bop on this release.
