O’s Notes: This is a tribute to the late Abbey Lincoln. Though Schenck and Lincoln never performed on the same stage, Virginia has long recorded Abbey’s classics leading to this dedicated collection. “Bird Alone”, “Learning How To Listen” and “Throw It Away” are just a few of the fine renditions that marry the legends work with a fresh take by Schenck. We were skeptical at first but Virginia and her polished band including Kevin Bales (p), Rodney Jordan (b) and Marlon Patton (d) create all of the emotions that typify Lincoln performances: rage, blues and warmth.
