O’s Notes: Pianist Bob James is one of the pioneers of the contemporary jazz format with many strong albums to his credit. He’s been absent form the recording scene for a while but surfaces here with a collaboration made during 2004-5 in China with the Angels of Shanghai. Bob still has his characteristic sound with Nathan East (b, vocals), Jack Lee (g) and Harvey Mason (d, perc) joining him. The Angels play traditional Chinese instruments this is a marriage of East and West sounds that reminded us of Hiroshima on tunes like “Gulangyu Island”. The results are very warm and relaxing. They will spread their collaborative genius with a world tour this year.
