O’s Notes: Pianist Ryan Cohan has performed for many years with Geoff Bradfield (sax), Lorin Cohen (b) and Drummer Kobie Watkins. For Another Look he adds Joe Locke (vibes) and percussionist Steve Kroon. They warmed up with a six week European your before heading to the studio to record eleven Cohan originals. The groove is modern bop/jazz-fusion across a range of tempos. “Bradford” ignites the flame on “Joshua” inspiring Cohan to follow with a spirited solo. Locke leads the initial melody on “You & Me”, a mellow ballad. Ryan’s version of “Caravan” has a funky syncopated Latin groove that we enjoyed. Cohan leads the charge on “Steppin’ Up” with Locke also contributing a fine solo. Watkins does a fine job keeping time as well as maintaining the energy throughout. This is a fine session.
