O’s Notes: Trumpeter David Smith leads his quintet through a program of seven mild fusion tunes. The program includes four Smith originals, one from guitarist Nate Bradley and a couple of covers, notably a relaxed arrangement of “All or Nothing At All”. Kenji Omae (sax), Gary Wang (b) and Greg Ritchie (d) round out the band. The sound is mellow on “Carillon” with warm brass that is typical of the session. They even cast a bit of warmth over Contrane’s upbeat “Satellite”. This is a solid recording that could be classified as neobop or fusion.
