O’s Notes: Daniel Smith is highly regarded as a bassoonist on the classical side and several years ago he burst onto the jazz scene. He made a splash not only because of the unique placement of a bassoon in jazz but his fleeting improvisation has been right on target. Daniel’s tone is sweet, if that is possible from a bassoon, but we think he’s found an excellent fit with the Latin program. It fits his groove and he has a band that is really grooving as well. Daniel Kelly (p), Michael O’Brien (b), Vincent Ector (d) and Neil Clarke (perc) are the core. Guest artists Sandro Albert (g) and Roswell Rudd (tb) play on two tracks each notably “Mt. Kenyatta” and “Watermelon Man”. The solos are popping around the horn, as this is unquestionably Smith’s best jazz album yet!
