O’s Notes: Pianist Karl Ikonen forms a trio with bassist Ara Yaralyan and Markku Ounaskan on drums. They take us on a journey of Beauteous Tales and Offbeat Stories. Yaralyan’s use of the bow places his bass into the spotlight on several selections notably “Astri Pes”. All of the music is original, four written by Ikonen and the balance by the band. The program is provocative and daring with many different flavors including Latin, fusion and a taste of free jazz. It is within the reach of most modern jazz lovers. “Poorab Disa Se” and “Countdown” are among our favorites.
