O’s Notes: This CD features several takes of bop pianist, Bud Powell. The first was at the Royal Roost in New York in December 1948. Bud and his tentet were hired as a replacement group after Miles’ permanent separation from Bird the night earlier. Leonard Feather introduced the band as rising stars. J.J. Johnson (tb), Lee Konitz (as), Buddy DeFranco (cl) and Max Roach (d) were among the crew. Solos were shared around the horn and free flowing. The final 7 songs came from 3 other sessions: a trio recorded in Paris in 1959, again in 1960 and a quartet in Edenville, France in 1964. It is a fine musical documentation of one of the pioneers of bebop.
