O’s Notes: Drummer Matt Wilson’s Big Happy Family is a large ensemble that includes Matt Balitsaris (g), Terell Stafford (t), Jeff Lederer (sax, cl), Joel Frahm (sax), Larry Goldings (p), Martin Wind (b) and several other very talented musicians. They combine contemporary takes on New Orleans jazz, blues, fusion and modern jazz with Wilsons compositions. The party is raging on “Request Potato” followed by the contrasting parlor jazz on “How Ya Goin’?” and later with the lazy sounds of “Flowers For Felecia”. We also liked the cool vibe on “Feel The Sway” and “Lester” as Wilson pushes the needle in many directions on Beginning Of A Memory sparkling our imagination and appreciation.
