O’s Notes: Jackie sings 13 songs inspired by Billie Holiday and Dolly Parton. Yes, this is quite a contrast in styles but it is quite natural for Sutton who incorporates elements from both legends into her own style. Henry Darragh (p, tb) arranged all of the music and there are prominent banjos, cellos and even accordions incorporated into what Jacqui calls frontier jazz. It is a blend of bluegrass, country blues and traditional jazz vocals. The bottom line is that it is a successful formula that will resonate with many listeners. “Lazy Afternoon”, “My Man’s Gone Now” and “Keeper Of Your Love”, a duet with Lyndon Hughes (vocals) are excellent examples of the mood of this session. We also enjoyed “Endless Stream of Tears” and the upbeat groove of “Risk” with Paul Chester (g) and Dennis Dotson (t).
