O’s Notes: The Planet D Nonet is a Detroit based large ensemble led by percussionist RJ Spangler and trumpeter James O’Donnell. They celebrate the music of Duke Ellington during his Cotton Club years (late 1950s -early 1960s). Right from the start, this energetic, swinging band grabs your attention. They will have you on the edge of your seat, anticipating the next song. “Moon Maiden” features trombonist John “Tbone” Paxton singing! We also get the raspy, vocals of trumpeter James O’Donnell on “Take the A Train”. But it’s the instrumental work that stands out on Blues To Be There, a fine salute to Duke.
