O’s Notes: Leon Foster Thomas plays steel drums in front of a tight-knit rhythm section. He plays his instrument with a much more jazzy fusion style than we’d typically hear them. Brand New Mischief is exactly that; a contemporary jazz set featuring Thomas’s fresh music and arrangements. His rousing lead lines on “Sleepless Nights” and “Enchantment” cast the steel pans in a different light than we’ve heard before. Thomas extracts rich tones and strikes chords that work on all tempos. Other highlights are “Amour Bleu” and the funky title track. This is indeed a fine session.
