O’s Notes: Jazz saxophonist John Surman has experimented along many paths but returns to a more standard jazz-fusion for Brewster’s Rooster. He invites John Abercrombie (g), Drew Gress (b) and Jack DeJohnette (d) to join him. They form a stellar quartet, no doubt! The program is seven originals and two covers notably Billy Strayhorn’s “Chelsea Bridge”. Surman plays baritone for most of the set picking up his soprano sax only on a couple of tunes. Our favorites were “Hilltop Dancer” and the title track.
