O’s Notes: Brian was recognized by Downbeat magazine as one of the best sax players when he was in high school. He studied at Berkelee and hit the New York jazz scene before settling in Atlanta. Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Michael Brecker and David Sanborn influenced him. You can hear a little of each of them in his signature. Lopes leads a trio with drummer Jeff Sipe and bassist Neal Fountain. They play nine tunes, mostly free bop composed by the trio. The best of the lot is “2 Pavilion Way”, a funky fusion number that really pops. We also enjoyed the free flow of “Terrelism” held together by Fountain’s walking bass line.
