O’s Notes: Bassist Phil Brown leads the New Arts Jazztet, a sextet with Tyler Kuebler (reeds), Bob Allison (t), Mel Goot (p), Ron Coulter (d) and Tom Hensold (perc). They perform a mellow set of ten original selections mostly by Brown with one each from Kuebler, Allison, Goot and Coulter. The music swings on “Swank” and gets a little funky on “Underdog”. The brass shines on the upbeat “Sunk in Dars” and pops on “Kind of Blue”. Our favorite is “Sarah’s Song” with a cool Latin vibe. They touch a lot and are focused on bringing as much joy to the listener as they have playing. It works!
