O’s Notes: Combining one of the best contemporary jazz pianists, the late Joe Sample with the relentless power of the NDR Big Band built our hopes of a great set. Joe’s inspirations for the music were the African slaves who had toiled for the sugar cane trade of St. Croix. We hear the pain, the hopelessness and the celebration of the enduring people that survived, a beautiful culture that rose out of a terrible institution. All of that powerful emotion is captured on Children of the Sun as many African American writers refer to those early African slaves. This is masterfully done, recorded in 2011 and released late in 2014, a fitting tribute to Joe and African American pioneers.
