O’s Notes: This is the debut recording on Dark Keys for trumpeter Laura Kahle who came to the NY jazz scene from Australia. She composed all of the music, plays a pocket trumpet and is surrounded by a wealth of talent including executive producer, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. Guest artists Claudia Acuña (vocals) and Monte Croft (vibes) appear on “Blackberry Garden”, a dark ballad. Watts does a fine job of keeping time as well as injecting bursts of energy as on the opening of “Duality”, one of the best cuts along with “Sweets”. Kahle’s tone is warm with the smaller trumpet and her compositions are good, an excellent platform for Watts.
