Mary Jenson, 2009, CD
Instrument: Female Vocals
Jazz Ruler Type: Ballads, Blues
O’s Notes: By the time we reached the third track, we realized that this is a unique jazzy ballads album. That song is “Cool”, a perfect descriptor for the fusion-laced music layered with rap lyrics from drummer Darian Gray, a cool trumpet solo from Erik Jekabson with Mary’s honey smooth lyrics. Jensen’s voice is projected in front of the band and is easy to enjoy. She incorporates Latin flare on a “Dindi” and “Besame Mucho” then romances us with “Les Feuilles Mortes”. Even the title track is a spruced up arrangement of a common classic. We really enjoyed “It’s All Right With Me”. Mary took some risks with the level of diversification offered on this recording. An expanded audience on this delightful performance rewards her.
