O’s Notes: John Scofield is a living legendary fusion guitarist who seems to get better with each release!“Combo 66“is a celebration of his 66th birthday (September 28). The combo is a quartet with Bill Stewart (d), Vincente Archer (b) and Gerald Clayton (keyboards). All of the songs are originals. They vary the tempo and genre from the cool, mysterious groove of “Combo Theme” to the country/blues of “Willa Jean” and even a relaxed ballad, ”I’m Sleeping In”. Our favorite is the bouncy “King of Belgium” dedicated to the late Toots Thielemans capping a set that amplifies Scofield’s versatility.
