O’s Notes: Veteran sax player Redman teams up with a solid core of musicians for Compass. The band includes Brian Blade (d), Larry Grenadier (b), Ruben Rogers (b) and Gregory Hutchinson (d). They play thirteen new Redman compositions. The use of dual drummers and bassists on the same tune adds dimension and character on “Identity Theft”. “Hutchhiker’s” Guide” is more of a swinger in the standard trio format contrasting with the ballad host”. The prevailing mood is dark. “Um Peu Fou” is an upbeat exception along with our favorite on the session, “Round Reuben”.
