O’s Notes: Costumes Are Mandatory features a seasoned quartet produced by pianist Ethan Iverson. Larry Grenadier plays bass with Lee Konitz on sax and Jorge Rossy keeping time. The music really swings on the blues based “Blueberry Ice Cream” courtesy of Grenadier. They play fourteen tracks in total in a wide range of meters leaving a lot of space between the musicians to allow full appreciation of individual contributions. They accentuate the off beats while keeping listeners engaged. The interaction and respect between these players is excellent especially on “My Old Flame”.
