O’s Notes: Tenor saxophonist Sommer invites one of his heroes, fellow sax man Rich Perry to play along with him on Crossroads. The pairing works well as they complement each other on tunes like “Think of One” where they harmonize the lead line. Eric Gunnison (p), Ken Walker (b) and Todd Reid (d) are a formidable rhythm section behind them. The program is mostly standards, some popular and some obscure along with two of Peter’s originals. “Shoshin”, a ballad with mild blue tones, is among the best. We also liked the bouncy swing of “Carpe Coffee” and the unified melody on “Alone Together”. Two tenors in a quintet may be off of the beaten path but it works well here.
