O’s Notes: Japanese trumpeter Natsuki Tamura leads a quartet with pianist Satoko Fujii, Kelly Churko (g) and Tatsushisa Yamamoto (d). Tamura call it a ‘noise band’ and we say it is good noise! They play five of his original compositions starting with the title track that could easily serve as a score for a horror film. The musicians extract unusual sounds from their instruments in a very coordinated presentation. Many times we were confused as to the origin of the sound! The stage is quiet and though there is an abundance of improvisation, it is well coordinated and not overbearing. It is one of the more intriguing free sessions that we’ve heard this year.
