O’s Notes: Bassist and composer Matt Ulery is based in Chicago and lights up the local jazz scene regularly with fresh, eclectic music. Ulery’s ninth album“Delicate Charms“features his quintet with Zach Brock (violin), Greg Ward (a-sax), Rob Clearfield (p), and Quin Kirchner (d). There is a strong performance from Brock and Ward who lead the melodies across all tracks. The result is a cross of chamber music and intense, introspective jazz as Ulery provokes listeners with his compositions. Our favorites are ‘Taciturn‘ and ‘The Air We Breathe‘.
