O’s Notes: Ma-do is led by pianist Satoko Fujii with Natsuki Tamura (t), Norikatsu Koreyasu (b) and Akira Horikoshi (d). It is her 50th release as a leader. The all-acoustic quartet plays free fusion based on the darker side. All of the music is original and Fujii gives the musicians a lot if space to explore their creativity. As always her interaction with Tamura (her husband) is seamless. We enjoyed “Sunset In The Desert” – a showcase for drummer Horikoshi with complements from Koreyasu using the bow. Desert Ship has many written complexities while allowing for ample amounts of improvisation. Fujii, the Japanese powerhouse persists.
