O’s Notes: MJ is a cabaret style singer who dedicates this session to the heartaches of romance. She sings ten classics arranged to fit her blues style. Among the best are “Gotta Serve Somebody” and the title track. She is supported by a solid band that bounces along through the ups and downs of her heartbreaking lyrics. Alan Rosenthal (p) and David Shaich (b) stand out with definitive solos on “Devil May Care” and Jon Doty (d) partners with Territo on the opening of “Throw It Away”, one of the finer moments of the set. Dennis Winge (g) adds a taste of bossa nova for the ever-popular “Waters of March”. MJ is at her best on the stage-like numbers.
