O’s Notes: There are African rhythms in this session and the opening chants are a preview. The Messengers are also here but Blakey is a drummer and he takes the opportunity to showcase percussion on this recording. But they don’t forget how to cook! Check out “Nica’s Tempo” featuring Jackie McLean on sax. The CD is broken into three pieces; the first 3 tracks are percussion and the rest feature the Jazz Messengers groove that we are familiar with. Yes, these recordings of the mid-1950s had the pop and sizzle that made the Messengers and Art Blakey Jazz!
