O’s Notes: Bassist John Lindberg and Karl Berger (vibes, piano) perform a series of free jazz compositions. They play as a duet leaving lots of open space to enjoy the tones. We liked the interplay between the musicians on tunes like “3-3-3-7” and “Yatan Na”. We’ve enjoyed John’s avant-garde jazz before, sighting a lack of confusion and chaos. This remains true here without stifling creativity. They converse through their instruments, a discussion that was initiated way back in 1975 when John was a student and Karl the Director at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY. They promise Duets 2 and we anxiously await another good session.
