O’s Notes: Woodwind specialist Oscar Lavën resides in New Zealand and serves up a definitive mix of traditional jazz on Elegant Calamity. The percussion on “Dizzy Campaign” imparts a big band Latin feel, a vibe that continues through the session. We enjoyed the passion of “Butterfly”, “Pharoah Blue” – with an excellent sax intro, “Cloud Serendipity”, and the exotic pulse of “Tall Poppy Stomp”.
