O’s Notes: The legendary Ella Fitzgerald needs no introduction as a formidable jazz vocalist. For this session, Ella sings from the pages of Antonio Carlos Jobim on another of producer Norman Granz’s famous ‘Songbooks’. She gets support from some of the best jazz musicians including Clark Terry (t), Alex Acuna (d), Paulinho Da Costa (percussion) and Toots Thielemans (harmonica). There are eighteen classics sung in both English and Brazilian Portuguese. Ella shines on both fronts. This album was made in 1980-81, late in her career yet she still possessed the vibrancy to convey the intended energy and emotion. It’s a great pairing and performance, worthy of addition to any collection.
